The Small Town III
This view is of the town of Krumau on a bend in the Vltava river. Rather than painting the town as it is, he composed this painting from memory, in a free interpretation of the local landscapes. Colored buildings that are lined up on the banks of the dark water are like decorations. Schiele has captured the depressing atmosphere of the town where he once stayed, and the isolation and solitude he felt there in black patches to complete a landscape that has lost all vitality.
