Krumau on the Vltava (The Small Town IV)

  • Egon Schiele (1890–1918)
  • 1914
  • Oil, black chalk on canvas
  • Leopold Museum, Vienna

Egon Schiele depicted the houses opposite the Schlossberg in Krumau from an extreme top view. The houses were re-imagined by Schiele in bright yellow, blue, and white. The buildings were simplified into flat, geometric shapes. The dark river and the roofs represent the theme of isolation and solitude in urban settings that Schiele continuously revisited.
