This drawing was inspired by Auguste Rodin’s bronze Femme accroupie, which depicts a woman crouched in an almost identical pose with her right hand resting on her left ankle. Schiele drew the essentials of Rodin’s statue but created a more balanced composition with the right hand holding the left foot and the left hand holding the right knee, highlighting the feet as the most important part of this complicated pose.
