Portrait of Arthur Schnitzler

  • Max Oppenheimer (1885–1954)
  • 1911
  • Oil on canvas
  • Leopold Museum, Vienna

Max Oppenheimer participated in the Vienna Kunstschau exhibitions in 1908 and 1909, and came into contact with protagonists of Vienna’s art and culture scene, from whom he was able to acquire lucrative commissions. His portraits at the time are characterized by reduced brown and gray colors that capture the sitter’s individuality. Oppenheimer wrote the following about portraying Arthur Schnitzler: “With each portrait it is important to create a type that is timeless, so that it may continue to be of interest even once the impact of a person on the present has waned.”
