Most of Oskar Kokoschka’s paintings from around 1914 are characterized by pastose colors applied with bold, broad brushstrokes. Victor Ritter von Bauer’s face stands out brightly against his dark green suit and the dark background. In addition to the expressive and angular depiction of the face, Kokoschka places particular emphasis on the hands. Von Bauer was an Austrian industrialist and art patron who was associated with Adolf Loos. It is likely that Loos introduced Kokoschka, his protégé, to von Bauer.
