Hermann Schwarzwald II
Hermann Schwarzwald and his wife were well-known patrons of arts. The couple’s apartment in Vienna was a meeting place for the city’s intellectuals and Expressionist like Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele. In addition to financial aids, the Schwarzwalds helped the artists to present their works to the public. In this portrait, Kokoschka emphasized the hands and the face as the most expressive parts of the body. He intended to capture the sitter’s personality on the canvas with his special technique of impasto and scratches.
