Silver Saucer with Lapis Lazuli

  • Design: Koloman Moser (1868–1918)
  • Execution: Wiener Werkstätte
  • 1904
  • Embossed silver with lapis lazuli trimming
  • Leopold Museum, Vienna

Koloman Moser designed a variety of silver table service ensembles. As with other vessels in the same service, this saucer was smoothly polished, chased with geometric patterns and inlaid with lapis lazuli* stones. The simple yet meticulously crafted pattern displays the high craftsmanship inherited by the Vienna Workshop and their ideals of combining functionality and beauty of design.

*Lapis lazuli is a semiprecious stone which is deep blue in color. It was used to decorate the tombs of ancient Egyptian pharaohs in religious ceremonies.
