This chair was designed by the Austrian architect and art theorist Otto Wagner for the telegraph office of Die Zeit. He pursued the ideals of functional and practical design which deviated from traditional styles. The wood parts were softened by steam and bent into desired shapes for this chair. The Jakob & Josef Kohn was one of the most sought-after furniture manufacturers in Vienna around 1900 and executed designs by artists including Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser.
