This is a portrait of the German art critic Herwarth Walden by Oskar Kokoschka. Walden advocated various new styles of art, including Expressionism. Owner of a publishing company and a gallery in Berlin, Walden had a lasting influence on new art movements and played a crucial role in their international distribution. Der Sturm, a magazine first published by Walden in 1910, supported Expressionists and included several illustrations by Kokoschka.
