Village at the Foot of a Hill

  • Egon Schiele (1890–1918)
  • 1907
  • Oil on cardboard, mounted on wood
  • Leopold Museum, Vienna

This autumnal view shows houses and trees lined under sloping fields and meadows in the background. Although it seems like a view taken straight from nature, Schiele has composed the landscape with great care. The gently undulating boundary at the bottom of the foreground meadow opposes the coarse, thick brushes that depict the opposite slope. Schiele’s early landscapes show his many experiments with different viewpoints and compositions.
