Several members of the Vienna Secession traveled around Europe, and a few also to Asia, to experience new art and communicate with artists from diverse fields. Furthermore, the Vienna Secession held exhibitions to show art from other European nations and came to portray a new scenery of Austria influenced by art from across Europe.
The conservative Vienna Academy of Fine Arts that adhered to tradition rejected new directions for the arts and closed itself off to the artistic stimuli that were inspiring Europe at the time. The Vienna Secession, on the other hand, was unafraid of embracing novelty and tried to internalize it rather than imitate it. This open-mindedness by the Vienna Secession stimulated Vienna’s entry into the era of Modernism.
