Production of woodcuts flourished in late-nineteenth-century Vienna. Carl Moll, one of the co-founders of the Vienna Secession, also created many woodcuts of views around Vienna. This print depicts a winter view of the Belvedere Gardens. The viewer’s gaze naturally shifts from the statue on the left to the open garden path to Belvedere Palace in the background. Moll skillfully uses reflections of light and a nuanced coloration to convey a winter atmosphere.
