Ver Sacrum was first issued to promote the opening of the First Exhibition of the Vienna Secession in March 1898. A tree stands at the center of the illustration, with three empty escutcheons hanging from it like fruits. Each represents the three fundamental fields of art: architecture, painting, and sculpture. The roots of the tree that have broken free of the pot, and the title of the magazine Ver Sacrum, meaning “holy spring” in Latin, represent the aims of the Vienna Secession to break with the past in search for new forms of art.
