The Vienna Secession published the art and literature magazine Ver Sacrum (Sacred Spring). Issued for six years from 1898 to 1903, the magazine enhanced the understanding of international art trends and supported the dissemination of new art. It is considered the best available material for examining the early history of the Vienna Secession.
Different artists were in charge for the design of Ver Sacrum, and each shaped the style of the magazine in their own way. This is characteristic of the Vienna Secession and its pursuit of unrestrained systems unfettered by specific styles. Ver Sacrum was a multidisciplinary medium that realized the Vienna Secession’s Gesamkunstwerk ideal by integrating literature, art, and cover designs.
