Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt is widely known for his prominent use of gold, but the one word that can describe him as an artist is “innovative.” He worked in traditional styles in the early years of his career and was bestowed awards by the emperor, gaining him great fame. However, he soon turned his attention to new, allegorical themes and was influenced by various artistic movements that were causing a sensation in Europe such as Symbolism, Impressionism, and the Viennese form of Art Nouveau.

Klimt led Austria toward the era of Modernism by introducing works from other countries and actively engaging in exhibitions. Moreover, he generously supported young Austrian artists pursuing experimentation. His desire for innovation eventually exerted a considerable influence on the art world.
